Ty has completed the CARES program through the Georgia Council for Recovery (GC4R) and has the designation of a Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialist (CARES- 47) /Certified Peer Specialist-Addictive Diseases (CPS-AD), volunteers with Georgia Overdose Prevention (GOP) and is trained by them to teach overdose reversals.
Ty originally received the designation of Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) in Virginia in 2018.
As a Respect Institute Graduate, he shares his story of hope and recovery. This program is offered by the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network (GMHCN) and the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD). As a Recovery Advocate he is a Presenter and Facilitator for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). He shares his story of recovery as an In Our Own Voice (IOOV) Presenter and is a Connections Support Group Facilitator (CSG), a support group for those with mental health concerns.
Ty is a professional speaker, comedian, actor and enjoys leading Yoga of 12 Step Recovery (Y12SR). He holds a certificate of Professional Actors Training from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. As the Executive Director of Stand-Up 4 Recovery he produces professional comedy shows for the recovery community featuring comedians in recovery. Their initiative is to get overdose reversal medication into venues around Georgia and help facilitate sober open mics as well as workshops.
Ty takes his recovery seriously but doesn't take himself too serious. He shares a Guinness world record for longest comedy show with multiple performers and tours as a storyteller and comedian sharing his experience, strength and jokes to audiences across the country. Stand Up 4 Recovery has been featured on PBS and NPR affiliate WABE as well as Mobilize Recovery Across Georgia.
While he’s far from retired he happily lives in his RV. Ty’s not sure if comedy saved his life but it’s certainly helped save his sanity.
